Back
to our same routine working on the farm.....When Sunday came
we would go to Church; was wonderful. We also would have fun
going with our friends (the one that had a vehicle) to different places.
Of course we girls had boyfriends, or puppy love, whatever you wanted
to call it. ![]() We enjoyed going to the movies, my favorite movie was Gone With the Wind. I suppose I saw that movie three or four times and read the book. (I was a book worm). Had a great time while school was out. When School started again, I was a sophomore...Growing up! One
weekend, we girls decided to go horse back riding. We had a
friend with us and didn't know she had never ridden a horse
before. So
there were three horses and two on each. The friend rode
with me in the saddle. I told her to put her right foot in the
step and
I would put my left foot in the step, that would balance the saddle. We
traveled for miles that day across the river to the other side.
After going here and there, one of my friends said, "Let's go to
Grandma's. My Dad and Mom are supposed to be there for a
birthday
dinner." As we started on our way, our horses began to start
looping. We couldn't get them stopped. So my friend
let her foot come out of the step which unbalanced the saddle and
my
weight pulled the saddle over. My friend had already fallen off.
There I was with my foot still hung in the step. The horse was
dragging
me along with my head hitting the ground! We were almost at the place where
we
were going, and when we got there, the horse stopped, my foot came out
and I
landed on my tummy. I tried to raise my head up, no way, the back
of my
head was beginning to swell. Everybody started gathering
around to see how bad I was hurt. (It hadn't hurt my friend
much, few scratches and bruises) So my other friend's Dad and Mom took
me
home in their car. When we arrived at home, my parents were
so scared, they thought I had broken my neck or some of my other
bones. They didn't take me to the Doctor, just used home remedies.
( I
had never been to the Doctor, even when I was younger and had the bad
German and red measles, scarlet fever, mumps and whooping cough, you
name it, seems I got it.) Anyway, I had to stay home from school for
two weeks. I couldn't raise
my head from the pillow without lifting it with my hands, what a
time. The good Lord just took care of me, as I didn't have
any broken bones.![]() Back to school after two weeks. By then the school had started a roller rink in the Gym. So I tried my luck, finally learned how to skate, what a thrill to be able to skate. Finally they set up a roller rink about 15 miles from where we lived, we would go every chance we got. Oh, I fell many times, but I sure enjoyed it. ![]() We still attended church, and were taught about Jesus very young. Mom played the guitar and we would sing at home. A joy. ![]() ![]() Finished my Sophomore year---summer again and back to our old routine, farm work and fun in the sun. We all would go fishing and enjoyed it very much. ![]() Oh, our mail carrier rode a mule to deliver the mail. He sure had a long route, he did that for many years, until he could afford a jeep. Also, after a few months we got our road black-topped, we thought that was great, no more gravel and mud. In my Junior year of School we were required to take French in order to graduate. Also I had typing which I truly enjoyed. I made it through the the third year, then school was out for the summer months. Same routine in farming and fun. We all had boyfriends, would go to church, fish, pitch horse shoes, play ball--all kind of games for us to enjoy. ![]() My Senior Year was the best... We had our Junior and Senior prom, that
was where I met my husband. He was in the army and was home on leave. I
thought, Oh, he is so handsome in that uniform. We saw each
other while he was on leave even though he would soon be leaving, but we wrote
to each other for a long time.![]() While in my Senior year, Dad and Mom bought a house next to the main highway, so we were close to the bus, just step out the yard into the bus. How time changes.Yes, we lived on a small farm (mostly woods) when we moved close to the highway but still worked on the old farm as well where we grew up. So Dad had a big farm and a small one; it was only about three and a half miles between the two farms... ![]() Our Senior class didn't have to do much, went on our Senior trip, had a great time.... didn't work very hard most part of the last few months. But there was another subject I didn't like, shorthand. I also got to work in the principal's office one hour every day. I thought I was flying high. I had typing my last two years, that was my best subject of all. ![]() What a joy, I finally made it through those 12 years, graduation, and
my diploma. I was so happy and proud of my parents for
providing a way for me to graduate. My parents raised us children with morals. God blessed our family!Next in Chapter 8, I will need to look for a job... ... Home ... |
