Chapter 6 ... Times Flies -- High School This Time

Summer was almost over again, and we had plenty of work to do.  But we all had some good times while out of school.  Would visit with friends, go fishing, horse back riding and walk to the ball field, which was about half a mile from our home and watch the young men play baseball, that was a thrill for us.

BibleWe still attended Church, enjoyed going every chance we got. Once a year we would have all day meeting with dinner on the ground. We'd spread cloths on the ground to place our food and we'd all eat outside; had a great time....Time has made a change in many things.

Soon our good times were over, back to school!  However, it was a joy going to school, got out of a lot of work at home...just like children, trying to avoid work.

My first day back to school, after picking out my subjects and paying for the books and all the other things I would need, we all went to our home room.  It was required that we had to take four years of English to get all the credits to graduate. There was a room full of students, our home room teacher called the row. So the bell rang for our first class, which was my English.  As I entered the door, what a surprise I got and my heart dropped.  There sat the teacher I had in the fourth grade that stuffed the slaw in my mouth!  I thought, what is she doing here, do I have to deal with her again?  Yes, I did, because she was the only English teacher there. Made me sad. Seem as though I never could learn to care for her; bad memories, I suppose. That's what happens to children when they are small, if they are not treated good, it always stays with them.

school childrenI enjoyed my other teachers, some were men and some women. We had a library, that was called the study hall, so we had to go there two hours every day, one hour morning, one hour in evening, to study our lessons. After we finished with our lessons we would read one of the library books, we all enjoyed that. Also had two breaks a day, one in morning and one in evening.  Had a big lunch room, our dinner would cost twenty-five cents a day. The food was ok, but not like our Mom's great cooking.

Oh, I enjoyed going to the basketball games, but I had to stay over night with my girlfriend at her Aunt's, so they could take us as they lived close to the school. I really enjoyed going to school, never once did it ever cross my mind to quit.  I made good grades, not the best, but I finished my freshman year.  So when school would start back I would be a sophomore, moving higher makes a youngster feel good.

Summer again, now work begins...and more fun in Chapter 7...
