Chapter 3: The Two Room School

After attending the one room school for three years, they closed it and we had to attend a two room school.  Had to walk about three miles across the hills and valleys to the main highway, to ride the school bus ten miles to the school house.  I was now in the fourth grade, one room was from the first to the fourth and the other one was from the fifth to the eighth.

pumpWow, finally at last the school  hired a cook, and we had a good lunch. They used the cloak room for the kitchen. All of us children had to bring a short table cloth for our desk and plate, bowl, glass, and silverware.  Grace was always said before we ate.  After eating, different ones were picked each day to clean up and wash the dishes. The boys would pump the water and carry it to each room. Sometimes they would break the handle on the pump, so they could miss class and go to a neighbor's house to get the water. Sneaky, wasn't it?  Also in the winter time they would carry the coal for the stove, and take out the ashes.

kids playingI had a teacher I didn't like, she spoke so hateful. Wanted us to eat everything on our plate. One day we had slaw and I didn't like it.  She got the spoon and stuffed it into my mouth.  I didn't swallow it, caught her head turned and stuffed it in my pocket until I got outside.  I disliked her more than ever. We all couldn't wait until recess, some would play ball ( what we called round town) and others had other kinds of games to play.  We had about forty minutes of recess twice a day.

The school house sat next to a cliff not close, the cliff was thirty feet from ground, had a cave just below the top, which you could crawl through to the other end.  We always had a leader, so one day I thought I would try my luck.  The cave was very small, I got half way, could not cross the narrow part, and I thought this is it, I'm gonna fall over.  I finally got turned around and came out.  I said to myself, never again, this is it. Great day, what children won't do!  Finally time to go home, the ten mile ride on the bus, and the three mile walk back home. Were we ever tired and hungry. Our Mom always had a big supper waiting for us though, tasted so good!

American flagOh, we always had prayer and read the Bible and would say the Pledge to the United States Flag at school first thing, before our class ever started (we sure don't see that now days).

BibleWe also had a Bible teacher that came once a week, we sure looked forward to her coming. She would have us memorize Bible verses; if we got them all, we would get the Gospel of John, Story Book and Bible. We had to memorize seventy-five verses to get the Bible, that was a joy studying for those.

A big library van would come ever so often and bring us clean books to read, we enjoyed that, was great...We don't see these things done in the schools now, so sad!
