Well, after school was out for the day, we began our long walk
back home. So tired and hungry. Sometimes
we would stop and rest. (Oh, we had to take our lunch,
sometimes one would get stolen, and no lunch for that person,
and no one wanted to share.) We were so anxious to get home,
because we knew Mom would have a table full of food. After eating we had chores to do.
I was small, but I did my part. Living on a farm, you
name it, all kind of animals to feed.
Our Mom not only worked in the home, but she helped do the outside chores as well. She also made all of our clothes, ordering the necessary items from the Sears catalog. She hand-stitched many items and used what we call an "old-fashioned treadle sewing machine" for the rest.
Dad was a truck driver, and he was gone a lot, but when he was home, we all sat around and listened to him tell things of his childhood events, it was amazing. Everyone was so still you could hear a pin drop; we were in the story with him, what a happy time that was. When it would snow, it sure was deep! We children had a time, climbing the hills and sliding back down. During the winter months, after school, we would sit around the fireplace and Mom would pop corn in the fireplace, also she would roast potatoes in the hot ashes, wow, was that ever good. We didn't have electricity and used oil lamps. We had a battery radio, only got to hear it on Saturday nights, the Grand Ole Opry. Our two story house was big, we all would sleep upstairs, no heat, but a lot of covers to keep warm. We all enjoyed everything; our home was full of love.
Oh, Dad would take us and a big crowd to church in his truck, he would put the cattle rack on and place a tarp over that, so we all could ride in the back of the truck. What a great time everyone had! Sometimes a big crowd of us would walk to Church. We had to cross the river in a boat to get to another church, was scared coming back in the dark, crossing the river. But our Lord took care of us. The two room school: Chapter 3 ...
